Students will study the elements and vocabulary of painting,
architecture, and sculpture in their historical context. A college level text will be used, as
well as the instructor’s slide collection and prepared handouts. The class stresses critical thinking and
the ability to articulate what the student sees and knows about the world’s art. The historical art
periods studied include the following: Prehistoric, Near-Eastern, Egypt,
Ancient Greek and Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Early and High Renaissance, Baroque,
Neo-Classical, and 19th century Realism and Impressionism. The pluralism of the 20th century
is briefly studied, as is the art of Africa, Asia and the Americas.
