•     Title I Screening Toolspencil

Our Delaware Valley School District uses a variety of tools to identify student strengths and needs. We also consider parent and teacher recommendations. Parents may request Title I Reading services for students enrolled in grades K-5. Students who either demonstrate a need on two or more screening tools, or have a parent or teacher request, are recommended to receive Title I services. Parents may request or opt out of these services at any time.

The following is a brief description of the screening tools we use.

    Bracken (Kindergarten Screening)

Bracken Basic Concept Scale Expressive is a verbal response test of a child's basic concepts skills expressively. This assessment is administered in a 1:1 environment during the spring kindergarten registration. It helps determine cognitive and language development in prekindergarten students.

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) (Grades K-5)

This tool evaluates students on a variety of reading skills. It is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures that can be used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills in kindergarten through eighth grade. It begins by looking at basic letter naming, phonemic awareness skills, blending and segmenting words, for primary aged students and leads into word reading, oral reading fluency and comprehension (MAZE). The assessment tool is administered by the reading teachers and only takes a few minutes in a 1:1 setting.

STAR Reading (Grades 2-5) (Grade 1 for independent readers)

In less than 20 minutes this computerized assessment, assesses a broad range of reading skills and then identifies where each student is on a learning progression aligned to Pennsylvania's grade-level standards. Both classroom and reading teachers utilize this information to design reading lessons based upon student strengths and needs. The STAR Reading Assessment is administered several times each year and teachers are able to track student growth over time.

    DVOG Screening (Grades 1-2)

The DVOG test is a curriculum based assessment that measures a student's proficiency of writing and spelling. It is based on our multi-sensory approach to teaching basic language skills, concepts, and rules.
